I feel the same impulse nearly every time I’m writing the introduction to a book. I’ll think: “I should just say, ‘This is a book about’” Sometime I actually go through with it. But the impulse is always there. It comes from wanting to break through the mass of cultural static and speak clearly, unmistakably, to an audience. You’re trying (I’m trying) to look like you’re not trying to sell somethingyou’re just describing the thing exactly as it is. But trying to not-try is still trying. It’s a fine little paradox.
