My wife went to New York last weekend and happened to see Madeleine Albright at the Sephora in Columbus Circle. She has zero interest in Madeleine Albright; yet this was one of the first things she told me when she got back.

Three thoughts:

> She said Madeleine Albright looks smaller in real life. It’s also possible that Sephora looks bigger in real life.

> Why, exactly, is it so remarkable to see Madeleine Albright at the Sephora? Is she a celebrity? Is it something about the clash of high (global diplomacy) and low-ish (mall-based consumerism) worlds?

> Note the Columbus Circle food chain: Whole Foods on the basement level, Sephora on the second floor, and the most expensive restaurant in New York on the fourth floor.
