The question at the Preservation Society of Newport County was one of emphasis. Is the organization more about “preservation” or more about “society?” The mansions of the Gilded Age tell a rich story. And a complex one. The parties were (and are) famous, but what about the thousands of architects, draftsman, bricklayers, ironworkers, carpenters, and seamstresses who spun ideas into gold? Adding to the complexity is that the PSNC is about more than the Gilded Age; it is a steward of our national identity, dating back to the Colonial era. Our job was to help the PSNC attract the funding necessary to maintain the legacy of hardworking Americans on rarified grounds.
