Generation Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of sculptural works by Luis Castro.

Luis works in wood and stone, creating works with a sense of lightness, potential mobility and play. Each piece has a particular material history: the step of a Baltimore row house, a piece of a NYC courthouse, or the trunk of a majestic maple. He cuts, grinds and sands rough heavy materials until objects emerge that evoke feelings of tenderness and sensuality. Smooth surfaces, open forms and curved shapes belie the courser origins of the sculptures.

Luis was born in Venezuela and received degrees in Architecture and Restoration of Monuments from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He has lived in New York for over 20 years. His work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries such as DM Contemporary, New York; Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia; Reynolds Gallery, Richmond, VA; The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY; the National Academy of Design; and Wave Hill, Bronx. Luis represented Venezuela at the Second Triennial of American Sculpture in Argentina. He has been awarded fellowships to Yaddo, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Millay, Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany, and the MacDowell Colony.

The work will be on view through September 30 at Generation Gallery.
